CHICAGO (PRWEB)
August 17, 2006

Last weekend, music artists from reggae, hip-hop, and R&B convened in Chicago for the 2006 Global Mixx DJ Retreat. The annual began with exclusive listening sessions, hosted by Bad Boy, Jive, Virgin, Interscope, J Records, Capitol and Atlantic. During the Atlantic Records listening session, DJs were treated to surprise appearances by Lupe Fiasco and Twista. At the invitation-only private DJ outing, sponsored by Bad Boy, Eightball and MJG greeted DJs along with veteran DJ Biz Markie, who demonstrated his trademark style on the turntables. Usher’s group, Once Chance (Us Records), stopped by the J Records listening session to mingle with the DJs and preview their new projects.

Saturday, the Global Mixx sponsored a fun day in the sun and invited the Chicago community to watch live performances and a BBQ grill-off. Re-emphasizing the importance of community involvement, The Global Mixx treated over a hundred deserving children from The Kanye West Foundation, Common Ground, and The Boys and Girls Club of America to the all-day event. During the middle of festivities, the children were honored with an impromptu appearance by Kanye West and Common.

Immediately following the outdoor outing, retreat attendees headed to the Park West Hotel for an evening packed with surprises at the Second Annual Global Mixx DJ Awards Show, presented by Def Jam. Method Man opened the show with his parade grand marshall-style welcoming remarks. Spoken word artist, J-Ivey hosted the annual show. The first performance of the night was by A-Kid, a trick-style DJ child prodigy. At only five years old, standing on a crate, A-Kid captivated the crowd with a stage performance reminiscent of a young Michael Jackson. Then Disturbing Tha Peace (DTP) songstress, Shareefa, electrified the audience. Climaxing her performance was the spontaneous interruption by label head, platinum rapper, Ludacris. Chicago-native and DTP’s Shawna capped off the night of performances with a rap routine that brought the ballroom to its feet. Other celebrities in attendance included Rich Boy, Young Capone, Boss Man and Common, who was on hand to accept the Global Mixx’s $10,000 donation to his non-profit organization, The Common Ground Foundation. Between high-energy performances, the best in the industry for 2006 were announced.
